Gaming In The Classroom

In class I thought we had an interesting discussion on the topic of gaming in the classroom. I feel that technology, like gaming, can be extremely beneficial in the classroom, if used correctly and implemented at the right time. Kids are now growing up in a time that is full of technology, it would be beneficial to connect with them on that level in order to help them learn.

We recently read an article by Tom Boelstorff, entitled Coming of Age in Second Life.  It was a very interesting article and kind of gave me a whole new perspective on virtual worlds.  I grew up playing games like the Sims, but that is about as close to a virtual world as I've ever gotten. If you told me that we would be tweeting during class, I would think that it was being done slyly and you were trying not to get caught.  Yet, in our class we used Twitter as an educational tool.  I thought this was a really neat concept, and I had a lot of fun doing it.  I think that a lot of teachers and classes could benefit from teaching students how to use Twitter correctly and to use it to its full advantage.

I must admit, before these last few classes, when I heard the term "graphic novel" I immediately thought of "comic books." And when I heard "comic book" I thought of geeks who were stuck in their childhood.
