Son of a Son of Anarchy

Posted on November 20, 2015 at 8:58am 17 Comments

Sometimes, a fantasy comes upon me that takes on the character of a rhizome; it becomes a node from which another shoot of fantasy shoots.  The fantasy fantasizes.  It’s as if somewhere in the journey from the fantasy’s beginning and end, a piece of it musters its own mulish energy, peels away, and veers onto a side road that leads to elsewhere and otherwise.

I recently purchased a pair of Nike Air Force One sneakers, the kind of shoes Jax Teller wears in “Sons of Anarchy.” …

In Praise of Chocolate

Posted on October 28, 2015 at 8:07am 23 Comments

As it is nearly Halloween, it is time to praise that most desirable addition to the trick-or-treat bag: chocolate.

“The superiority of chocolate, both for health and nourishment, will soon give it the same preference over tea and coffee in America which it has in Spain.”  So said Thomas Jefferson, who perhaps had chocolate in mind when he declared that, along with life and liberty, an independent America would be dedicated to the pursuit of happiness.  But, alas, Jefferson died too…

The Wasps

Posted on October 14, 2015 at 8:48am 15 Comments

As they have annually for some time now, on or about October 10, the wasps arrive.  Never in the summer.  Only with the serious onset of Fall.  At any one time, right now, in fact, anywhere from one to three elegantly slender, narrow-waisted, resonantly buzzing bodies congregate on the living room piano window.  They construct a nest inside the house wall, tucked up near the front-porch soffit, and despite my past attempts to caulk possible ports of entry, I am, finally, unable to discover…

A Change of Season

Posted on September 30, 2015 at 7:39am 18 Comments

The squirrels have been unusually active in recent weeks, scampering down the elm and maple trunks, venturing out across the backyard to scrounge out and secure whatever edible nuggets they can find, then scampering up again and across the skywalk of limbs to stock the larder of their nests.  They are preparing for winter.

Soon, I, too, will be preparing, clearing eve troughs, raking the leaves, detaching hoses from spigots, transporting cans of paint from the garage to the…

Welcome!

With any new site, we understand that finding your way around can be a bit daunting. To help you use our site, we have a few resources and tips, all of which can be found on pages under the Support tab in your top menu bar. They are:

FAQ- here you can find some quick answers to general questions, questions about privacy and about site features.

Site News, Tips & Tricks - this is our forum where you can find tips on using the site, news about site changes and other information from the staff and other members.

Our Terms Of Service and Our Copyright Policy can also be found under the Support tab.

You may also find additional help by going to chat and asking another member. Chat can be found in 2 place: There is a CHAT link in your top menu which will open chat in your browser.

The other option for opening chat is to use the small tabs at the bottom of most pages. The tab named "Opium Den" (our chat name) will open the in a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen. This window can also be resized or 'popped-out' and used as a separate window.

There is a "Members Online" tab on the bottom of your page too. This will show which other members are logged in (logged in does not mean they are active in the chat, simply they are logged in to the site). There is a small speaker icon which will allow you to adjust the chat beeps which many prefer to turn off or down when not actively chatting.

We have many excellent features and tools here. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the basics of posting and commenting are simple and before too long we hope you will feel comfortable and at home.

Bang around, explore, write, comment and most of all have fun!
