Why Writing A Book Is Like Moving

Posted on August 30, 2013 at 7:40am 4 Comments

You waste a lot of time as you finish up writing a book… and unfortunately it comes at a time when there’s not a moment to spare.  It’s frustrating.  It bogs you down and saps your strength, but it seems to be an inevitable part of the process.

Writing a book is rather like moving.  At first, everything is easy and predictable: you wrap the dishes and glassware in newspapers, take the books down off the shelf and throw the contents your dresser drawers into boxes neatly labeled…

On The Ancient and Honorable Art of Throwing Things

Posted on August 8, 2013 at 8:21am 1 Comment

The ancient and honorable art of throwing things has reached an apex of perfection in modern baseball.   Humans have learned to take a perfect sphere with an imperfect c0ver and launch it with pin-point accuracy from as far away as 400 feet and at speeds approaching 100 mph.  These human hurlers, “fielders” and “pitchers” they are called, curl into perfect tightened coils and then unleash themselves in a series of precisely timed arcs: foot kicks off… leg uncoils… hips rotate… foot comes…

In A Bar Thinking...

I am awash in grease and I stink of whiskey and chicken.

As has become my custom this summer, I have come to this local watering hole for Friday Happy Hour where drinks are half-off and an endless stream of chicken wings are free and all-you-can-eat.  That’s right, I can come in here and get a cold beer, three shots of whiskey, a butt-load of chicken (tonight I had 28 wings… that’s 14 chickens!), throw a $20 on the bar, leave a tip and still walk out the door with at least $5…

Beware Of What You Dream

Posted on July 30, 2013 at 10:02am 3 Comments

A good friend of mine called from far away to say that she had a dream about me recently.  She told me that I died in her dream and she was very sad.

“It was in the winter,” she said. “You were sixty-two.”

“That would be this winter,” I said, “the one coming up.”

“Yes, I suppose,” she replied, “it was cold and grey and someone called me to say that they heard that you were dead.  It was such a surprise.  It was from natural causes… I think it was a heart…

With any new site, we understand that finding your way around can be a bit daunting. To help you use our site, we have a few resources and tips, all of which can be found on pages under the ABOUT tab in your top menu bar. They are:

FAQ- here you can find some quick answers to general questions, questions about privacy and about site features.

Site News, Tips & Tricks - this is our forum where you can find tips on using the site, news about site changes and other information from the staff and other members.

Our Terms Of Service and Our Copyright Policy can also be found under the ABOUT tab.

You may also find additional help by going to chat and asking another member. Chat can be found in 2 place: There is a CHAT link in your top menu which will open chat in your browser.

The other option for opening chat is to use the small tabs at the bottom of most pages. The tab named "Opium Den" (our chat name) will open the in a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen. This window can also be resized or 'popped-out' and used as a separate window.

There is a "Members Online" tab on the bottom of your page too. This will show which other members are logged in (logged in does not mean they are active in the chat, simply they are logged in to the site). There is a small speaker icon which will allow you to adjust the chat beeps which many prefer to turn off or down when not actively chatting.

We have many excellent features and tools here. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the basics of posting and commenting are simple and before too long we hope you will feel comfortable and at home.

Bang around, explore, write, comment and most of all have fun!
