"Ahhhh, the parent of a pitcher.  Pure angst and joy on so many levels.  My son was fortunate to receive a full ride to a Division I school and then fortunate to play in the Minor Leagues for 5 years.  It is brutal in the Minors.…"

A little excessive

Posted on April 4, 2013 at 1:50pm 1 Comment

I live an hour away from a city with its share of gangs and graffiti.  I have no idea if this is always an added bearing when a police officer pulls anyone over.  I can't help but think it is.

The night before Easter Sunday my 24-year-old daughter was making her way to our house about 9:30 p.m. to visit.  She was alone.  She had already reached the California foothills not too far from a mega Indian casino. When she got to a passing lane on the two-lane highway she opened up and put…

Unraveling of a family on methamphetamine

Posted on February 19, 2013 at 6:37pm 5 Comments

I couldn't even begin to guess if our rural foothills community has more meth than other rural communities.  All I know I have seen my share in what it does to individuals.  Over the last 4 or 5 years I have observed the family up the road unraveling by meth.

This family has always been on the fringes of trouble.  Their now grown kids used to come down the road to visit my kids. From these visits I soon learned the make-up of this family and over the years their nearest neighbor and I…

Awwwww, Cheerleaders - ya gotta love 'em

Posted on January 18, 2013 at 11:13am 1 Comment

In these days of California school cutbacks, my 24-year-old daughter took on her high school cheerleading program to supplement her part-time English teaching income with no benefits.  Being a cheerleading coach, is it ever worth it?

She called last evening to inform me of the eventful afternoon she had to oversee.  Two junior varsity cheerleaders came to blows so bad the cops were called.  Both cheerleaders were expelled from school for the rest of the year and needless to say…

Christmas sled

Posted on December 14, 2012 at 12:08pm 0 Comments

I am not Martha Stewart nor did I borrow the sled decorating idea from Pinterest. I am proud of this sled because I pulled it all together from my own non-home-decorator head. I have been putting sled out for years; every so often I re-wrap faux gifts in new gold paper. This sled seems a perfect answer to our rural cul de sac…

With any new site, we understand that finding your way around can be a bit daunting. To help you use our site, we have a few resources and tips, all of which can be found on pages under the ABOUT tab in your top menu bar. They are:

FAQ- here you can find some quick answers to general questions, questions about privacy and about site features.

Site News, Tips & Tricks - this is our forum where you can find tips on using the site, news about site changes and other information from the staff and other members.

Our Terms Of Service and Our Copyright Policy can also be found under the ABOUT tab.

You may also find additional help by going to chat and asking another member. Chat can be found in 2 place: There is a CHAT link in your top menu which will open chat in your browser.

The other option for opening chat is to use the small tabs at the bottom of most pages. The tab named "Opium Den" (our chat name) will open the in a small pop up window at the bottom of the screen. This window can also be resized or 'popped-out' and used as a separate window.

There is a "Members Online" tab on the bottom of your page too. This will show which other members are logged in (logged in does not mean they are active in the chat, simply they are logged in to the site). There is a small speaker icon which will allow you to adjust the chat beeps which many prefer to turn off or down when not actively chatting.

We have many excellent features and tools here. While it may seem overwhelming at first, the basics of posting and commenting are simple and before too long we hope you will feel comfortable and at home.

Bang around, explore, write, comment and most of all have fun!
