UK Heading For a Tumultuous Election

Posted on May 5, 2015 at 6:30am 13 Comments

If any of you have been following the current UK election (it’s this Thursday) you’ll understand what I mean by the title.  For those who haven’t, it’s plenty interesting.  First though a quick primer and those of you already familiar with the parliamentary system can skip the next paragraph.…

The Climate Condition That Dare Not Speak Its Name

Posted on March 12, 2015 at 5:58am 9 Comments

For those of us adapted to life outside the Republican political bubble, what goes on inside that sociological anomaly is sometimes hard to fathom.  It’s a biosphere where admitting to a belief in evolution is politically toxic.   Where reneging on financial obligations is sometimes (i.e. during Obama’s presidency) viewed as a sound course of action.  Where acknowledging that human-caused global…

Zero Dark Thirty – How Important Is Its Accuracy?

Posted on January 22, 2013 at 6:23pm 10 Comments

I saw it recently and while it was quite engrossing, I found that the scene-to-scene continuity was at times choppy and the inclusion of some episodes seemed arbitrary and tangential to the main story line.  For example, there’s a bit about the London transit bombings but nothing about the Bali nightclub ones that killed many more.…

Open Call - Abra’s Truths and Lies

I was tempted to keep it short and sweet (I love you, I love you, I love you) but the better angel of my nature urged me to get into the spirit of the Open call.  So,

Hi, Abra.   I have a feeling we will be staying here for the long term.  It works and OS doesn't.  :D  Most have committed stay at least a month.

Good to hear from you! I dropped in at OS the other day for the first time in a long while. I was surprised that you were still there. I was not surprised that sports spam was still a problem, that the site was slow, that the same promises were being made about fixing it soon, that basically the management didn’t give a toss. One good thing about dropping in was that I found out about Our Salon. I am still trying to find my way around it. It looks more friendly than OS but some of the old lag OS troublemakers have joined. I have managed to have friendly exchanges with these particular lags but if I see that Nabina Nag/Rolling has joined, I’m outa here! I’ve hooked up on Facebook with many of the decent people from OS. Our Salon will give me the opportunity to keep in touch with others, such as yourgoodself. I recall that we had a brief conversation about Eric Clapton. I have written a tribute to a friend of Clapton. I would greatly appreciate it if you could find time to read and comment.
