We who live in the enlightened West in enlightened times like to think of most of the rest of the world as somehow less than. Less enlightened, less sophisticated, less, well, All American. We somehow see our obsession with material things, and with power and control, as sophistication a la Rome's late period. This of course includes bread and circuses, or NASCAR and, most especially, football. Well, other sports too, but primarily our national religion, football.
